Spring-cleaning tips

Ah, Spring! A time of flowers, new leaves, and…spring-cleaning. Nothing feels better than the warm sun on your face and coming home to a nice clean house. Check out these tips to get you started on your spring cleaning this year.

Our ancestors used to do a full house clean twice a year: once in the fall and once in the spring, and though we don’t tend to do quite as much as they did, it’s still nice to start the transition to the warmer weather with a clean house. It can also be a great time to do some of those tasks that tend to get put off, but still need to be done. So here are some things you can do during spring-cleaning.

Declutter Your Closets

This is a great time of year to go through clothing – yours and your kids’ – and weed out the unnecessary stuff. You would be swapping seasonal clothes out anyway, so why not take the opportunity to check if things still fit, then sell or donate anything you don’t need. It’s also a good time to check if anything needs minor repairs like patches or buttons.

Go Through the Medicine Cabinet

How many of you have old prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs sitting in your cabinets? Take this opportunity to go through and get rid of any old prescriptions and expired over-the-counter medicines. But don’t through them out! Take them to your pharmacy for proper disposal.

Clean Your Appliances – Inside AND Out

Spring is a good time to give all your appliances a good going over: defrost the freezer, scrub out the fridge, and give the oven that cleaning you’ve been putting off…and off…and off (or is that just me?) Don’t neglect your washing machine and dishwasher either. They work hard washing your dishes and clothes for you, and need a clean themselves every now and then. You can freshen both these appliances by running a cupful of vinegar through a full cycle. And check your dryer hoses as well. Lint can build up in there, creating a fire hazard.

Clean Your Ducts

Now that it looks like spring is here to stay and we’ve finally been able to turn the heat off, this is a great time to clean out your air ducts and get rid all of the dust and dirt from the winter. This doesn’t need to be done every year – maybe every three to five years – but don’t neglect them either!

Wash Your Windows

Wait for an overcast day to wash your windows. Direct sun can dry your cleanser before yu have has a chance to wipe it off, which can cause those annoying streaks.

Revive your mattress

Pay attention to the thing under the sheets. Press firmly with your vacuum's upholstery and crevice tools to clean the sides. Then, spot-clean stains with upholstery cleaner or mild suds. After spraying, let dry, then sanitize with a disinfectant spray like Lysol.
