Small Business Week Spotlight 2014: Bookkeeper - Jennifer Sibbitt

All business owners need help with different aspects of their company. Bookkeepers help keep track of finances coming in and out of the business.

Many small businesses fail within the first year due to a lack of financial know how. Many business owners don't realize how important it is to know your own business' financial health. You are busy running a business and don't have time at the end of the day to sort through all the paperwork. The folder or drawer of receipts keep piling up and soon you are writing cheques and making orders without really knowing how much money is coming in. That's where Jennifer Sibbitt - CPA, CGA can help.

How long have you been in business?

I have been in the accounting industry for over 13 years.

Why did you start your business?

I've been doing small business bookkeeping as a side business for many years. After having my third child, I decided to quit my full time corporate employment and pursue bookkeeping as my primary focus. I wanted to increase my work-life balance so that I can do the things that I love without the long hours and crazy commute of a corporate job.

At what point did you realize you had a passion for numbers?

My love for numbers started while in university. Money was tight so I had to be conscious about where my money was being spent. I would also get excited to do my taxes! As crazy as that sounds, I was looking forward to my refund every year. My husband still teases me since I do projected taxes at the end of the calendar year so that I know how much of a refund I will be getting. I enjoy helping others realize where they can increase revenues or cut on extra expenses to help their bottom line.

What do you love most about being an entrepreneur?

I really enjoy the flexibility that comes along with being an entrepreneur and the ability to manage my own future. As an accountant I get to learn about so many different types of businesses and I get new challenges to explore every day. I like to work with my clients and their individual needs so that they have the time to do what they do best - manage their business. My flexibility allows for clients whose needs range from once a year consolidation to financial check ups every couple of months to weekly office management.
