Children and Youth Pharmacare Comes to Ontario

How does the new pharmacare plan titled OHIP+: Children and Youth Pharmacare affect families?

More than 4400 prescription drugs will now be covered by OHIP for children and youth aged 24 years and younger. Coverage will stop on their 25th birthday. There is no program to apply for, all you need to have is your health card when you go to the pharmacy to pick up your childs prescription.

This is a program that I have to say I am happy the government has implemented. There are many families out there who do not have insurance benefits and single income families where benefits may not cover 100% of prescription costs. This will make sure that all children are able to get the help they need, when it is needed. No family should ever have to worry about how they are going to afford the medications needed to keep their children healthy, physically and/or mentally.

Here is a list of just some of the types of prescriptions that are covered by the program:

  • Antibiotics to treat infections
  • Inhalers for asthma
  • Various insulins, oral diabetic medications and diabetes test strips
  • Antidepressants
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Epilepsy drugs
  • Medications to treat mental health conditions
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drugs
  • Some drugs to treat childhood cancers and other rare conditions
